Definition[edit]

This is fibromyalgia in children and adolescents.

Underdiagnosis problem[edit]

Given that children with fibromyalgia have no outward tell-tales signs that this is the diagnosis, and given how easy it is for the disease to be overlooked as growing pains, there may be a serious issue of underdiagnosis. This will generally lead to under-treatment, or misguided treatment that does not begin to address key underlying issues such as stress or poor sleep.

Need for further research[edit]

According to Neumann et al. 2003 there was a relatively small volume of literature on fibromyalgia in children compared to adults. (Epidemiology of fibromyalgia. Neumann L, Buskila D. Curr Pain Headache Rep. 2003;15:362–368, available in full online at: https://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.1082.7226&rep=rep1&type=pdf.)

Prevalence[edit]

An Israeli stud found a prevalence of 6.2 percent. Buskila found that Israeli-born Jewish children were less tender than Bedouin-Arab children who were in themselves less tender than Ethiopian-Jewish children. This suggest that cultural factors are at work. (The Ethiopian-Jewish children were very likely the children of immigrants from Ethiopia.) (Cited in Neumann, 2003)

A study of Mexican children found it was only 1.2 precent. (Cited in Neumann, 2003)

Outcome[edit]

There was, according to Buskila, a favorable outcome for fibromyalgia in children. (Cited in Neumann, 2003)
