Derivation and Invention of the Word “Fibromyalgia”

Fibromyalgia is a misleading term because it sends a false message that it relates to fibrous tissue. There is a lesson here in that when the cause of a problem or disease is unknown, people often impose their theory and “inject” it into the name. Changing the name again at this late date would only create more confusion. It is now firmly established that the nervous system is involved as are psychological and sleep issues. It has never been in doubt that muscle pain and weakness/ fatigue are key symptoms. If one were in the business of trying to come up with a better name, they might try the following which is very awkward but reasonably accurate: “neuro-psycho-hypno-asthenic-myalgia”.
